Estate planning services that you can count on - learn about our story today
"From the boxing ring to petrochemicals and nuclear, and now - to planning your estate…I've spent decades finding my way through risky situations!"
I'll tell you a quick story, that starts with me lying on the canvas - floored by a man they called Kevin ‘The Mighty’ Quinn, and listening to the ref as he counted 3…4…5...
It's a fight I was winning, right up until I was caught off guard by a sudden right hook. But once I hit the deck, I knew I’d lost it. My trainer yelled from the corner. I forced myself up. But the ref got to 10 before I could get to my feet. I still can't express the despair I felt, knowing I'd thrown it all away. You see, I was a decent boxer. Number 14 in the UK lightweight division, and rising. But something told me that day, that part of my life was over. There were fierce opponents waiting. Fighters I could never beat, like Jim Watt, Roberto Duran and my stable mate Ken Buchanan. If I could lose a fight after being on top, there was no hope against the elite
Don’t get me wrong - I'm not one to run from a fight. But I could see my own limits now. And after seeing other guys affected for life, I figured: It's not a risk worth taking!
That's when I doubled down on my studies. I got my degree in Mechanical Engineering and took a job in the petrochemical industry - project managing in offshore construction. You could say I'd swapped one risky job for another. But this was on a much bigger scale. In the ring, it was only my life at stake, but here one small error could prove catastrophic to lives and the environment. Needless to say, I got pretty good at weighing up risks and putting in contingencies!
It was an exciting second career. I got to work on huge global projects, for companies like Shell, Aramco, Bechtel, Fluor Daniel, Texaco, Chevron…even the M.O.D. But when one job ended, I realised my heart was no longer in it. Time to switch direction again…
I'd heard stories of ordinary families facing extraordinary problems, across the whole spectrum of estate planning. I’d read about families that were torn apart, fighting for control of a sick parent’s assets or disputing their final wishes. Or forced to sell their family home, just to pay the taxman. All because they never saw the risk that lay ahead. I knew straight away, this was the right move for me; a chance to use my flair for spotting the risks in a situation, and my planning skills to make sure nothing goes wrong.
So, I retrained as a Legacy and Estate Planner. Learning all the legal pitfalls, and seeing echoes of my old life everywhere I turned. Just like boxing, I was learning to anticipate. Swerving and adapting, to avoid potential hazards. And like in the oil fields, I was making watertight plans. Learning to prepare for all eventualities. That’s why I love what I do now. I get to bring all my old talents to bear, to make sure your final wishes will be carried out to the letter. And these days, I’ve got more than a boxing coach in my corner! There’s a whole team of estate planning experts: tax attorneys, a leading trust lawyer, even a specialist barrister to defend cases when needed. So, you can plan your estate with me, knowing we’ve got everything covered. No disputes. No expensive lawsuits. No risk to you and your family.
I guess we should talk about that. So, get in touch, and let’s have a chat about your estate – then look at the risks that could scupper your wishes, and start making plans…
